Now Eli Broad is just playing hard to get

According to Sam Lubell over at the ArchPaper blog, Eli Broad (or his people) has spread the word that Santa Monica is not, in fact, the “winner” of the competition to host his foundation’s contemporary art museum (which would be built next to RAND Corporation’s HQ, above). No one knows whether all this civic competition for Broad’s attention has gotten to his head, but if you are a city official, it is apparently unwise to jump the gun and say you’ve got a deal when you have nothing but confidence to rely on (of course, this didn’t stop us from posting about Santa Monica’s prospects the other day).
Interestingly, the third city in the running for Broad’s museum was also revealed as Culver City - specifically, a 10-acre plot of land on West Los Angeles College’s campus. Notwithstanding that tidbit of info, I remain as suspicious as I was before that the Broad foundation is really only considering locations in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills. How could it be otherwise if the president of West L.A. College says he has never even talked with the foundation about putting a museum on college property?
Eli Broad must be having fun.
