NYTimes:  Battle between budget and beauty, which budget won

If you haven’t already, be sure to read Niccolai Ouroussoff’s excellent display of frustration over the events leading to Frank Gehry’s dismissal as architect for the New Jersey Net’s new Brooklyn arena.

His review perfectly describes the seemingly inevitable (and confusing) tugs-of-war between developer, city, neighborhood, economy, and architectural achievement that thrive amidst ambitious efforts at urban revitalization.  In this sorry story, the Atlantic Yards development is simply the stand-in for the many other large-scale urban projects (including the imbroglio at Ground Zero in NYC) across the country over last century that allowed short-sighted objectives overwhelm long-term needs.
